Barcelona presented the move with a rainbow holographic treatment in November 2024; Liverpool, Manchester City and Argentina carried the idea into their own club-and-country products. This is the documented starting point for this report—not a claim that no earlier promotional or regional card exists.

One football move became the whole identity.

A rainbow flick is instantly legible: the ball travels up and over a defender. Topps translated that moment into curved bands of colour, isolated action photography and a name that explains the card before a collector reads the checklist. Unlike a generic refractor, Rainbow Flick is both a visual treatment and a football idea. That makes the design portable across clubs, countries and products.

Barcelona gave the idea a generational cast.

The 30-card Barcelona checklist is where Rainbow Flick becomes more than a visual novelty. Lionel Messi RF-13 and Lamine Yamal RF-21 place the club’s defining superstar beside its new standard-bearer. The 2026 Argentina Team Set starts a separate 25-card Rainbow Flick checklist at RF-1. Alexis Mac Allister RF-3 produced an exact $40 raw sale on June 28, 2026. Lionel Messi is RF-10 in this release, which means a 2024/25 Messi #90 sale cannot be used to value the 2026 card. The player, country and insert name match; the release and identifier do not.

Merlin changed the product, not just the badge.

The 2026 Topps Merlin Premier League release moved Rainbow Flick into a 30-card, Value-exclusive checklist using RB codes. The base insert falls at 1:280 Value packs, and the official checklist adds Black, Red and Superfractor parallels. That is a different comp universe from an RF-coded Barcelona, Real Madrid or Argentina team-set card—even when the player name is the same.

The new Merlin sales widen the curve.

Gabriel Martinelli RB-5 sold for $400 on July 10, but that card is the Red /5 parallel and must stay out of the base-RB-5 comp set. Wilfried Gnonto RB-12 has three raw sales at $90, $90 and $95; Harry Kane RB-21 has one at $89. Sergio Agüero RB-26 is the deepest newly added name, with three exact raw sales from $25 to $59.99. Max Dowman still leads the surfaced base-card guide at $180.67.

Evidence can improve while price stays low.

Agüero and Gnonto earn 5/5 evidence scores because they pair exact photos and guides with three fresh matched sales. Kane, Mac Allister and Martinelli score 4/5 because each has only one surfaced sale. The older one-sale Messi record scores 3/5. Meanwhile the six 2024/25 Barcelona icons remain 1/5 RESEARCH OPEN. A score measures how well the record is supported—not how famous, scarce or expensive the card is.

The name is a map, not a comp.

Rainbow Flick now behaves like a design family: recognisable across products, but never interchangeable across them.
