The first insert was literal.

Beginning in the 1880s, tobacco companies used baseball players on cards to promote their products. The 1909–11 T206 issue makes the original model unmistakable: one card was placed inside each cigarette pack to build loyalty across the brands advertised on its back. Before collectors opened packs of cards, they found cards inside packs of something else.

Gum changed the audience.

In 1933, Goudey became the first American company to issue baseball cards with each stick of gum. The card was still a product premium, but the relationship had flipped from tobacco promotion toward a youth collecting habit. Bright color, star players and a checklist made completion—not just consumption—part of the experience.

Topps built the base layer.

The 407-card 1952 Topps set established the visual grammar of the modern sports card: a large image, player name and team identity on the front, then biography and statistics on the back. This is not an insert milestone by itself. It is the foundation that made inserts legible later—the special card only feels special when a stable base set exists around it.

The bonus became a measurable chase.

Upper Deck’s 1989 debut pushed card quality, photography and authentication forward. In 1990, its Reggie Jackson Heroes insert included the first autographed cards placed into packs. Donruss followed in 1991 with Elite, one of the hobby’s earliest serial-numbered insert sets. The chase now had two powerful proofs: a signature you could pull and a number that told you how many existed.

Refractors made the surface the event.

1993 Finest Baseball introduced Topps’ Chrome technology and the hobby’s first Refractor parallels. That distinction matters: a Refractor is an alternate version of an existing card, while an insert has its own checklist identity. Collectors soon chased both. Finish, color and reflected light became scarcity signals that could be recognized from across a card show.

The card became a piece of the game.

Upper Deck introduced game-worn jersey cards in 1996 Football and 1996/97 Hockey, then brought the idea to Basketball and Baseball in 1997. A card could now contain authenticated material rather than only depict a player. Relics and patches changed the object itself—and eventually created a new evidence question: exactly what was worn, used and certified?

The case hit became a design franchise.

Kaboom’s 2013/14 Innovation Basketball debut distilled the modern art insert: a 20-card star checklist, original comic-book illustration and roughly one card per case. The pull was scarce, but the bigger innovation was instant visual recognition. A collector no longer needed the card back to understand that the design itself was the chase.

Today, the name travels—but the evidence cannot.

Modern insert families such as Manga, Ultra Violet, Helix, The Man and Rainbow Flick move across sports, products and years. The visual language can be shared; the market record cannot. The correct identity still needs the year, product, sport, insert name, subject, card code, parallel and condition. Insert history ends where disciplined indexing begins.
